The Union de Cooperativas de Servicios Multiples (UCOSEMUN) was founded in 1998 in Nueva Segovia, the Northern most region of the country. It was formed by 8 small cooperatives with the purpose of improving the lives of small scale coffee farmers. Coffee is what every farmer grows, but they also produce corn, beans and cattle.
Through joint effort and work, the cooperative members have been able to acquire various certifications, such as Fairtrade, USDA Organic, UTZ, and Rainforest Alliance.
Nicaragua is not widely known as a tourist destination. But its a matter of time till people find out about this beautiful country. And Northern Nicaragua, the Jinotega and Nueva Segovia regions are amazing. With their volcanoes and high mountains and friendliest people, the region has so much to offer. Talk about getting young people involved in coffee farming. Below a picture of our young cupper at the cooperative. This is the future of coffee!!
